Following two engaging discussions under the African Youth Crime Prevention Platform (AYCPP), the United Nations African Institute for the Prevention of Crime and the Treatment of Offenders (UNAFRI) will host the third edition of its weekly X Spaces conversation series on Friday, 26 June 2026.
The session, themed "Mob Justice in Africa: Unpacking the Injustices Behind," will bring together young people, criminal justice practitioners, policymakers, civil society actors and other stakeholders from across the continent to examine the causes, consequences and prevention of mob justice in African communities.
Listen to the Previous Session
In the previous AYCPP discussion, participants explored "Xenophobia in Africa: Hate, Fear and the Future of Regional Unity," examining the impact of discrimination, exclusion and prejudice on social cohesion and regional integration across the continent.
Listen to the full discussion below:
Mob justice remains a persistent challenge in many communities, often emerging where there is frustration with crime, distrust in formal justice systems, or perceptions that legal processes are too slow or ineffective. While frequently presented as a form of community action, mob justice undermines the rule of law, violates fundamental human rights and can result in irreversible harm to innocent individuals.
The upcoming discussion will provide a platform to critically examine the phenomenon of mob justice, including the factors that drive it, the myths that sustain it and its impact on individuals, communities and justice institutions.
Participants will explore key issues such as the right to due process, the presumption of innocence, protections against torture and cruel treatment, and the role of regional and national legal frameworks in safeguarding justice and human rights.
The conversation will also examine the realities that often contribute to mob justice, including public perceptions of crime, challenges within criminal justice systems and the growing involvement of young people in incidents of collective violence.
Particular attention will be given to identifying practical strategies for prevention, including community engagement, public awareness, youth leadership and collaborative approaches that promote safety while upholding the rule of law.
UNAFRI invites young people, youth leaders, development partners, civil society organizations, justice sector actors and members of the public to participate in the conversation and contribute their perspectives on promoting justice, accountability and safer communities across Africa.
