From the Bar to Behind Bars: UNAFRI Hosts Sixth AYCPP Discussion on Alcoholism and Crime

UNAFRI’s sixth AYCPP X Spaces session examined the links between alcoholism, crime, domestic violence and prevention strategies in Africa.

The United Nations African Institute for the Prevention of Crime and the Treatment of Offenders (UNAFRI) held the sixth edition of the African Youth Crime Prevention Platform (AYCPP) on X Spaces on Friday, 17 July 2026.

The session, titled “From the Bar to Behind Bars: Analysing the Link Between Alcoholism and Crime,” examined the relationship between harmful alcohol consumption and criminal behaviour, as well as the prevention and intervention strategies that African countries can adopt.

Alcohol misuse is a complex public health and crime prevention concern. Its effects can extend beyond the individual, contributing to violence, family instability, unsafe communities and increased pressure on criminal justice and healthcare systems.

Through the AYCPP, UNAFRI provides a platform for young people, policymakers, researchers, practitioners and other stakeholders to exchange perspectives on contemporary crime and justice issues affecting Africa.

AYCPP Session 6 – Meet the Host & Speaker Panel

Meet the Host and Speakers

The sixth AYCPP conversation brought together a host and a diverse panel of speakers to share their perspectives on alcohol consumption, crime prevention, public policy and the wider effects of alcohol-related harm on African communities.

The discussion was moderated by John Vianny Ayebare, Legal and Research Officer at UNAFRI.

Joining him were:

Mr. Amos Warui (Kenya) – Ag. Director Compliance at the National Authority for the Campaign Against Alcohol and Drug Abuse (NACADA), bringing experience in alcohol and drug-abuse prevention, compliance, enforcement and community education.

Dr. Carel Van Wyk (South Africa) – Class A Trustee for Alcoholics Anonymous South Africa, bringing insight into governance, recovery and support systems for people affected by alcohol dependence.

Samuel Obaci (Uganda) – Education leader and consultant who contributed a perspective in defence of alcohol, broadening the discussion around regulation, individual choice and responsible consumption.

Simamkele Yonga Xani (South Africa) – Law student, entrepreneur, political activist and experienced student and community organiser, bringing a youth, rights and accountability perspective to the conversation.

Margaret Nassanga (Uganda) – Coordinator of the Uganda Alcohol Policy Alliance, bringing experience in evidence-based alcohol-control policy, prevention and public advocacy.
