On 28th April 2026, UNAFRI’s Acting Director General, Mr. Munanura Andrew Karokora, delivered a lecture to Fourth Year Criminology students at the Makerere University School of Law. The session provided students with an in-depth introduction to UNAFRI, its historical background, institutional mandate, and its role within the wider United Nations system.

During the engagement, students gained insight into UNAFRI’s work in supporting African Member States in crime prevention, criminal justice reform, and the treatment of offenders through research, training, technical assistance, and policy development.

The lecture also explored emerging and evolving forms of criminality, with particular focus on cybercrime and transnational organized crime. Mr. Karokora highlighted the growing complexity of these crimes in an increasingly interconnected world, emphasizing the legal, technological, and jurisdictional challenges they present to states and justice institutions.

Students were further introduced to the importance of international cooperation, regional collaboration, and capacity building in addressing modern criminal threats affecting Africa and the global community.

The interactive session offered an opportunity for students to engage directly with practitioners in the criminal justice field, bridging academic learning with practical and policy-oriented perspectives.
