Foreign Minister hosts UNAFRI Director
Following his appointment and assumption of duty on 1st March 2023, Dr Edouard Kitio’s meeting with Foreign Affairs Minister Jeje Odongo --- representing the Uganda Government, which hosts UNAFRI --- was purposed for presentation of his credentials.
Maj. Gen. Odongo said that Uganda has the conducive factors for the Director to discharge his obligations: the beautiful weather, friendly people and support from the State would provide Dr Kitio with a great environment within which to perform his duties and render service to member States.e Odongo, représentant le gouvernement ougandais, qui abrite l’UNAFRI, afin de lui présenter ses lettres de créances.

Le nouveau Directeur arrive
M. Kitio Edouad, magistrat horshiérarchie, a pris la tête de l’Institut africain des Nations Unies pour la prévention du crime et le traitement des délinquants (UNAFRI). M. Kitio, originaire de la République du Cameroun, est le cinquième Directeur de l’Institut depuis sa création en 1989. Il a pris ses fonctions le 1er mars 2023.

New Director Arrives
Dr Kitio Edouad, a super scale Magistrate, has assumed leadership of the United Nations African Institute for the Prevention of Crime and the Treatment of Offenders (UNAFRI). Dr Kitio who hails from the Republic of Cameroon is the fifth substantive head of the Institute since its inception in 1989. He assumed office on 1st March 2023.

Une réunion consultative de deux jours du comité d’entrevue du comité consultatif technique (TAC) de l’Institut a débuté le 25 octobre 2022 à Munyonyo, Kampala. Son mandat était, entre autres, d’interviewer les candidats de différents pays africains pour le poste de Directeur de l’UNAFRI.

UNAFRI to get new Director
A two-day Consultative Meeting of the Institute’s Technical Advisory Committee (TAC) Interview Panel got underway on 25th October 2022, in Munyonyo, Kampala. Its remit, among other issues, was to interview applicants from different African countries for the post of UNAFRI Director. It was chaired by Ms Rose Mutombo Kiese, the Institute’s Governing Board Chairperson, who also serves as the Minister for Justice and Constitutional Affairs in the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC).

The PNI family has been saddened by the loss of our dear friend Gary Hill on 18 September 2022. Gary was a great contributor to the work of the UN Crime Programme, the UN Crime Congress and the UN PNI. Gary also served as a member of the Editorial Team of the PNI Newsletter. The team has greatly benefited from his active engagement, wisdom and insights, and we will miss him terribly. Gary Hill in memoriam, page 12

Governing Board Chairperson visits UNAFRI
The Chairperson of UNAFRI’s Governing Board, Ms Rose Mutombo Kiese, who is also the Minister of State for Justice and Constitutional Affairs in the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC), made her inaugural visit to the Secretariat in April this year. The visit was in fulfilment of assurances she made when a UNAFRI delegation from Kampala visited her in Kinshasa, on 21st October 2021.

Foreign Ministry Reaffirms Support to UNAFRI
On December 16th 2021, UNAFRI’s Acting Director, John Sembuya Ssali, paid a courtesy call on Uganda’s Foreign Minister, Gen. Jeje Odongo.
Mr Ssali informed the Minister that voices of concern were emerging regarding the delayed development of properties Uganda donated to the Institute at the time of its hosting in 1989.

soutien à l’UNAFRI
Le 16 décembre 2021, le directeur intérimaire de l’UNAFRI, John Sembuya Ssali, a rendu une visite de courtoisie au ministre ougandais des Affaires étrangères, le général de division Jeje Odongo.
M. Ssali a informé l’Honorable Ministre que des voix inquiétantes se sont fait entendre concernant le développement qui tarde à venir sur les propriétés que l’Ouganda a offertes à l’Institut alors qu’il l’hébergeait en 1989.

Updates on PNI activities publications on cybercrime
The United Nations Crime Prevention and Criminal Justice Programme Network (PNI) consists of the United Nations Office on Drugs and Crime (UNODC) and 18 institutes and entities around the world. The mission of the PNI is to assist the international community in strengthening cooperation in crime prevention and criminal justice on the global, regional and sub-regional levels, within the framework of the United Nations Crime Programme.
In January 2022, the members of the PNI decided to publish a “PNI
Newsletter” as a way of sharing information on the contributions of the Network, in a way that could benefit a wide range of international and regional stakeholders as well as the general public.
