FOCUS ON THE 12TH ORDINARY SESSION OF THE GOVERNING BOARD OF THE UNITED NATIONS AFRICAN INSTITUTE FOR THE PREVENTION OF CRIME AND THE TREATMENT OF OFFENDERS (UNAFRI), HELD IN ADDIS ABABA, ETHIOPIA, OCTOBER 3, 2023.

Since its inception in 1989, UNAFRI has operated with the Governing Board and the Secretariat as its organs. But Article IV of the Statute provides that the Institute may equip itself with any other body necessary to effectively carry out its mission, and in addition to any other that may be established by the Conference of Ministers. For a very long time, the role of the Conference of Ministers remained unseen to the point of almost non-existence. The only supreme body of the Institute was then the Governing Board.
